The South of Ireland Lanark Sheep Breeders' fifth annual sale was held on Friday last at Roscommon Mart and drew a large turnout, with bidders and buyers arriving from all over Ireland.
The female stock kicked the sale ring into gear, with Gerard Goss from Co Louth selling two ewe hoggets, sired by £8,000 Craigdoo, for €800 apiece.
Following that lead, Brian and Christopher Curran, Glackmore, Co Donegal, followed suit, selling their two ewe hoggets, also for €800. The first of these was sired by £4,500 Auldhouseburn, and her pen mate was a daughter of £7,000 Upper Wellwood.
Kevin Barber, Yeats County Blackface, set the hogget ram trade off with a bang, selling his first ram, who had previously been the first-prized hogget ram at the national show in Tullamore earlier this year.
The son of £2,000 Fegan sold for €4,500 to fellow breeder Michael Ketch, Trenearla Blackface.
Barber maintained a commendable pen average, with his next hogget ram reaching €2,500, selling to James Gibbons, Co Mayo.
Brian and Christopher Curran continued to enjoy a good day's trading, with a first hogget ram, a son of £7,000 Upper Wellwood, reaching €4,000.
Fellow Donegal men Charlie Gallagher and Sons’ hogget rams also realised a strong average, topping €3,500 with their pen leader, who sold to Peter Ward. Their second, knocked down to Raymond Prendergast, sold for €3,200.
Kieran, Liam and Jack Donaghey topped €2,800 for their pen of hogget rams, selling their leader to Martin Gallinagh.
They maintained their strong trade, going on to sell a pair to Darragh Prendergast, each knocked down at €2,500.
Tom Staunton, Maskview, also reached a good pen average on the day, topping €2,200 with a son of £3,500 Midlock. He went to Pat Curran, Co Donegal.
Gerry Rice and daughters Millie and Jenna sold the first of their hogget rams to David McLoughlin for €2,000. Their second ram reached €1,800, selling to Stephen Cohen.
The lamb trade lit up the sale ring in Roscommon on Friday, with a memorable day for vendors Charlie Gallagher and Sons, setting a new sale record of €8,000 with their ram lamb.
The son of £7,000 Loughash topped the sale and heads back to Donegal with buyer Karol McElhinney.
Kieran, Liam and Jack Donaghey continued the good trade with their first lamb, who was previously Tullamore Show reserve champion. The son of £34,000 Craigdoo sold for €6,000 to Mike Grant.
The Donagheys' second lamb in the ring also made a very notable €4,000 and heads north with fellow breeder Charlie Phillips.
The Currans sold to a top of €5,000 for a son of a homebred son of the £7,000 Upper Wellwood. He was knocked down to Damien McSwiggan.
Overall, the sale saw a good clearance rate, with commercial Tups achieving prices of between €600 and €1,500.
