A buoyant trade for Limousin bulls was witnessed at the British Limousin Cattle Society's show and sale in Ballymena Livestock Mart on Friday 24 October.

Twenty bulls went under the hammer on the night to average just over £6,320 (€7,216), with two bulls hitting the 10,000gns mark.

Leading the charge at 12,000gns (€14,386) was Birchwood Volcano from Ronan McGurk in Co Tyrone.

A son of Ampertaine Progressive and out of the Irish-bred cow Millburn Jewel, a Sympa daughter purchased at the Millburn dispersal in 2020, this February 2024-born bull carries two copies of the F94L gene and was acquired by Carrigeen Farms Ltd.

Judge Declan McKenna found his overall senior champion in the form of Larkhill Vavavoom, the property of Brian McAuley.

Coming on two years old in January, this powerhouse of a bull is sired by Whinfellpark Lomu and out of the Millgate Fame-bred cow Larkhill Jenny.

A carrier of the NT821 and F94L genes, he joined Jim Heery's elite weanling producing enterprise for a sum of 10,000gns (€11,988).

Hitting 9,000gns (€10,789) was the overall junior champion Merrisfield Vinti from Drumhill Farms.

Bred by Sean Mullan in Co Derry, this May 2024-born bull is all Ampertaine breeding, sired by Ampertaine Majestic and out of the Ampertaine Elgin-bred cow Ampertaine Stunner.

Wrapping up this double-F94L carrier was P and S McNally.

Superhero son

C and F McAuley from Toomebridge, Co Antrim, was next best with Carmorn Vantheman at 7,500gns (€8,991).

A son of the 11,000gns Seanita Superhero and the Rocky daughter Carmorn Margarita, this May 2024-born bull was knocked down to a suckler farmer in Co Down.

Three bulls went away at 6,000gns (€7,193). First up was McParlands Val from the McParlands in Newry, a February 2024-born son of Castleview Gringo.

The reserve intermediate champion Artanagh Victor also hit 6,000gns, selling to a suckler enterprise in Co Antrim.

Bred by WJ McIlroy in Co Down, he is a son of Wilodge Cerberus.

The last bull to achieve 6,000gns was Drumhilla Vip, brought out by Gareth Corrie. This 18-month-old bull is Ampertaine-bred on both sides of his pedigree, sired by Ampertaine Elgin and out of Ampertaine Lucia.
