As has been the case for many years now, the 2025 National Hereford Show will be held at this year’s FBD National Livestock Show in Tullamore.

There are more than 170 Hereford cattle entered across 19 classes, giving the judge for the day a daunting task.

This year the Next Gen Herefords will have 20 young breeders exhibiting, all hoping to take home the Dennis Collins Memorial Trophy (Junior Young Handler Class) or the WJ Twomey Memorial Trophy (Senior Young Handler Class).

Breeders exhibiting Hereford cows and heifers entered in the seven female classes will be vying for the Hereford Female Champion crown, with 57 heifers competing for the Hereford Heifer of the Year.

On the bulls’ side, entries across five classes will compete for the title of Hereford Male Champion, with the breeders of 45 bulls hoping to win the prestigious Hereford Bull of the Year accolade.

Commenting on the show, breed secretary Alan Crowe said: “The ultimate goal for any Hereford breeder is to be crowned Overall Hereford Champion at Tullamore.

“The Irish Hereford Breed Society looks forward to seeing all of their exhibitors, members, customers, and friends at the National Hereford Show in Tullamore, for what promises to be a showcase of the top Herefords on the Irish show circuit.”

Shorthorns

Judging of the Beef Shorthorn will kick off at 10am sharp in Ring 14, with Dairy Shorthorn judging commencing at 11.30am in Ring 2.

This year’s lineup includes the All-Ireland cow and calf class, the all-Ireland senior bull class and a wide range of classes for heifers and bulls of all ages. Once again, a number of young handler classes will take centre stage, for under-15s and under-20s.

These are qualifiers for the final in Elphin and offer a great way to get the next generation involved. New for this year is a commercial Shorthorn class sponsored by the society for the best Beef Shorthorn female with no permanent teeth on show day.

The competition will highlight the breed’s potential when used in the commercial suckler herd.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, breed secretary Shauna Mulhall, said: “We’re really looking forward to another great day at the FBD National Livestock Show in Tullamore, where the Irish Shorthorn Society will be out in full force.

“Everyone is welcome to call into our tent, located at L51, for a chat and to meet other breeders.

“The presentation of our perpetual trophies will take place in the tent after the showing, and this is also when we will officially launch the 2025 Breed Journal.

“Breeders are warmly invited to join us for the presentations and launch.”

Angus

Both the Irish Angus Cattle Society and the Irish Aberdeen Angus Association will be in attendance at the show.

More than 120 Angus cattle will be on display across a wide range of classes.

Last year’s overall champion went to Liss Minree Z285 exhibited by Sean and John McEnroe from Co Meath.

The question is, who will be crowned the 2025 champion?

Irish Moiled cattle will also be in attendance with 19 entries, further enhancing their increasing popularity.
