John McEnroe from the Liss Aberdeen Angus herd had the task of judging the 2015 Munster Aberdeen Angus Club herds competition.

The results were announced at the club’s open day which was hosted by Eustace and Deirdre Burke, Ballyginnane, Carrigaline, Co Cork.

More than 100 people braved the elements to view the Clontead herd of 20 cows and followers which included the much admired show cow, Shankill Lady Helton J049.

Cottage flock dispersal

Gordon and Yvonne Johnston, Swiss Cottage, Tyrrellspass, Co Westmeath, will disperse their entire Cottage flock of 60 pedigree Vendéen in-lamb ewes on Saturday 10 October starting at 2pm. The Johnston’s have operated a closed ewe flock for many years and all ewes participate in a detailed health plan including vaccination, dipping, foot-bathing and mineral monitoring. The flock has been active in performance recording since the early days of the LMI scheme and joined LambPlus at the start. The sale will feature 17 shearling ewes, 30 senior ewes and 12 ewe lambs. All ewes are eligible for export and scrapie monitored. Gordon and Yvonne Johnston took the Sheep Farmer of the Year of the Award in 2014. Recording initiative at Cheviot sale

The Wicklow Mountain Sheep Breeders show and sale of Cheviot sheep will take place in Blessington this Saturday 3 October starting at noon. About 250 rams will be on offer. Meanwhile, the annual show and sale of Wicklow Cheviot rams and ewes will take place next Wednesday, 7 October in Stranorlar/Ballybofey mart with judging kicking off at 6pm. The rams on offer will have pedigree information and performance evaluations. Such progress has been made possible by the Wicklow Cheviot Sheep Breeders who have placed strong emphasis on the recording of information at lambing and weighing while also working closely with Sheep Ireland to collate data.

Suffolk sale

National Dairy Show deadline
