Widely regarded as one of Ireland's leading pedigree Shorthorn herds, the online timed auction of the Ricketstown herd in Co Carlow was always going to be a stellar event.
As the sale closed on the evening of Monday 22 September, it was evident records were going to be broken, as bids came in fast and frequent in the closing stages for the numerous all-Ireland champions on offer.
When all was complete, auctioneer Denis Barrett reported a full clearance of the 14 lots (12 heifers and 2 bulls) and a record breaking sale average for pedigree Shorthorns in Ireland of €5,007.
Stealing the limelight and selling for the highest price of €8,300 was the first lot to close, Ricketstown Mayflower Tily. Born in January 2023, this Chapelton Winsome daughter is the reigning two-year-old all-Ireland champion and sold in-calf to the 2023 Tullamore champion, Ricketstown Popeye. Carrying a four-star replacement index of €118 and a nice balance of terminal indices, she was snapped up by a breeder in Co Monaghan.
Record breaker
Setting a new record price for a Shorthorn bull in Ireland was Ricketstown Velocity P. Just 17-months-old, this heterozygous polled bull is a son of Upperhill Todd going back the Australian bull Sprys Patents Ace G38 on the dams side. As well as an out-cross pedigree, Velocity displayed a solid set of figures, including five-star terminal and Dairy Beef Indexes. A herd in Co Louth secured him for a new male record price of €7,000.

A Welsh based herd paid the same price for Ricketstown Urymaid Trixie H, a February 2023 born daughter of Glenisla Masterton P and Coxhill Urymaid P646. This promising heifer went to auction with the reserve overall championship from Tullamore in her locker and is scanned in-calf to Ricketstown Popeye.

The 2025 all-Ireland junior heifer champion Ricketstown Crocus Vavavom was next best at €6,200. Another daughter of Upperhill Todd, this 17-month-old maiden heifer was knocked down to a herd in Co Meath.
A Northern Ireland buyer paid €6,100 for another maiden heifer, Ricketstown Flossy Vouge RO P. This stylish yearling heifer is a daughter of Chapelton Winsome and the Podehole Elite bred dam, Ricketstown Flossypearl.
