Sligo-based breeder Martin Herity, from Ballineden, took home the top price of €5,250 and the supreme championship at the first of the pedigree sales organised by the Midland & Western Livestock Improvement Society in Carrick-on-Shannon recently.

A steady trade saw a 70% clearance and an average of €2,750 for Charolais bulls (22 sold) and €2,200 for Limousin bulls (five sold). Four bulls were exported to Northern Ireland.

In the ring, judge Michael Hargroves awarded the supreme Charolais championship to the October 2014-born bull Coolembley Jim, exhibited by Martin Herity.

By Guepard, the champion went on to sell for €3,000, while Martin’s second bull Coolembley Jupiter, sired by Pirate, took home the top price of the sale at €5,250.

In reserve was Clohanmore Jerry, another Guepard son, this time bred by Michael Mullins, Clohanmore, Cree, Co Clare, and selling for €3,000.

Roscommon breeder Michael O’Hara, Cloongrehan, Cootehall, took the top Limousin price of €3,100 for his November 2014 bull Cootehall Jude, sired by Towthorpe Dubai. Not stopping there, Michael also got €3,100 for his Charolais bull Cloongrehan Jarvis, by Pirate.

  • €4,400 for Bostonia Jimbean, sired by Blelack Digger and bred by Brendan Feeney, Enniscrone, Co Sligo.
  • €3,100 for Carnacluane James, sired by Cloghogue Felix and bred by Brendan Bruen, Drumnacool, Co Sligo.
  • €3,000 for Clewbay Jumbo, sired by Goldstar Echo and bred by Charles Hughes, Lankhill, Westport, Co Mayo.
  • €3,000 for Churchfield J536, sired by Inverlochy Ferdie and bred by John Nerney, Shankill, Elphin.
  • €2,900 for Trusk Jupiter, sired by Mandela Veron and bred by James McCafferty, Trusk, Ballybofey, Co Donegal.

    • Angus sell to €4,700

    At the Angus sale in Carrick last Saturday, the top price of €4,700 went to Cannon Park Bestman R327 exhibited by Tom Reynolds, Knockadrinan, Bornacoola, Co Leitrim.

    Just 12 months old, he was awarded the reserve Aberdeen Angus championship under judge Victor Wallace in the pre-sale show. Sired by the noted AI sire Bunlahy John G (BJG), he is out of Knockadrinan Bell B224 – a daughter of Fullham Mr Zeus Z104 – and sold to Eric Johnston, Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh.

    Taking the Aberdeen Angus championship was Drumcarbin Electric P204, exhibited by Shane McKiernan, Cavan, Co Cavan. This December 2014-born bull is sired by Cardona Potter K703 and failed to meet his reserve in the sales ring.

    Meanwhile, Strokestown breeder Sean Neary was awarded the overall Irish Angus championship with his July 2014 bull Cregga Leo 303, sired by Mogeely Joe and selling for €3,900. The reserve went to Steil Lucky 271, a The Moss Kriss son bred by Joe and Cathal McCormack, Steil, Tulsk. He sold for €4,500. Overall, 35 Angus bulls sold for an average price of just under €2,500.

  • €4,200 for Drumcrow Live Wire, a son of Cartron Roe Ernie, bred by Frank McKiernan, Drumcrow, Ballinagh.
  • €3,500 for Farmhill Lad, sired by Lisduff Dandy and bred by James Regan, Loughglynn, Castlerea.
  • €3,000 for Killernan Long Back, a Mogeely Joe son, bred by Martin Hehir, Killernan, Miltown Malbay.
  • €3,000 for Shankill Mintrel, sired by Eastfield Black Beauty and bred by Pat and Finbarr Cahill, Co Cavan.
  • €2,700 for Rockville Larry, a Logboy Fergal son bred by Anthony Dockery, Elphin.
  • €2,700 for Ernehill Lorcan, sired by Gorthaganny Easy Delight and bred by Francis and Noel Fitzpatrick, Milltown, Belturbet, Co Cavan.
  • €2,700 for Crossdoney Leslie, sired by Mogeely Joe and bred by David Armstrong, Crossdoney, Co Cavan.

    • Meanwhile, Benny Lang, Ballinacarrow, Ballymote, Co Sligo, sold his December 2014 Shorthorn bull Finlough Falco, sired by Chapelton Typhoon, for €1,900.

    There was steady trade for Hereford bulls, with Duibhgiolla Ted, a Banner Dandy son bred by Kevin Diffley, Clooncolligan, Bornacoola, selling for €2,600, while Lough Rinn Vancouver made €2,500 for breeder Coote Geelan, Cloonageeher, Dromod. Aiden Wrynne, Gorvagh, Mohill, took home €2,350 for the Kilsunny Goliath son, Satrissaun Archie. Five animals were exported to Northern Ireland.
