It's been an unforgettable year for Cork breeder John Appelbe and his esteemed Hereford bull Appel Uno PP.

On Saturday, the homozygous polled bull topped the society's premier show and sale in Golden Vale Mart, Tullamore, selling for €9,100 to the Corlismore pedigree herd in Co Cavan.

A son of Solpoll 1 Lawman and Appel 1 Pretty Daffy ET, the March 2024-born bull came to auction with the National Hereford Show championship from Tullamore in August under his belt.

He continued that form on Saturday, as judge Michael Dullea awarded Uno the title of overall champion of the show once again.

As well as impressing with his phenotype, he also offered buyers a fantastic set of figures, displaying five-star indexes across most traits.

Overall trade

Overall trade was mixed, with some of the older lots getting away well and many of the younger offerings struggling to meet their reserves.

In the end, auctioneer Eamonn Gaffney reported a 55% clearance and a sale average of €5,545.

Achieving the second-highest price of €8,600 was Glaslough Batman HH, a full horned bull from Monaghan breeder Nigel Heatrick.

Born in April 2024, this Balleen Hitman son goes back to a homebred dam by Ballyaville Ger. He carries a five-star replacement index of €120, as well as below average calving figures across beef and dairy.

A first-prizewinner in his class, this stylish dark red bull attracted lots of interest from pedigree folds, before eventually falling to a herd in Co Clare.

High index

Westmeath breeders Tom and Anselm Fitzgerald received €6,700 for their April 2024-born bull Grianan Blake PP.

A homozygous polled bull, Blake is a son of Panmure 1 Henry and the prolific breeding cow Dendor 1 Greta 31st.

Again, pedigree breeders battled it out to secure this high-index bull, with Daithi Carroll from Co Wexford having the final call.

Hitting €6,000 was Balleen Topgun HH from the herd of Tom Brennan in Co Kilkenny.

A son of the herd's successful stock bull Ballinveney United 2, Topgun picked up a second-prize ticket in the pre-sale show. He also has an impressive array of indexes, which included a carcase weight figure of +11.8kg. This full horned bull will now join a herd in Co Kilkenny.

Superstar

One of the stars from this year's summer shows was next best at €5,000.

Gurteragh Superstar 1156PH conquered many shows this year, winning the reserve overall ABP beef bull of the future championship at Iverk and the reserve overall male champion at the FBD National Livestock Show in August.

Once again, the heterozygous polled bull made a lasting impression in the show ring, claiming first prize and reserve overall championship before going on to find a new home in Co Offaly with Eamonn Cleary.

Matching him at the same money was Broughall Fred PH, a heterozygous polled bull from the fold of Liam Feighery in Co Offaly.

A son of Aughavoneen 1 Lawman, his dam Cill Cormaic Karen is a daughter of Cedar Liam.

Despite being low on indexes, he attracted a number of interested parties before getting knocked down to a herd in Co Donegal.
