Comment: Chairman of the IFA Pigs Committee Pat O’Flaherty said that despite a stable position in the UK, where prices have been unchanged for the last three weeks, some Irish producers suffered two devastating and opportunistic price drops over the Christmas period. The currency is working in favour of the exporters here and, with EU supplies down and the forecasted drops already through, expectations are that sow prices will start to rise first, followed by pig prices. This cannot come quickly enough, as costs of production are unchanged and farmers are haemorrhaging.
