A fresh planning application has been submitted for a large-scale solar farm and energy storage development, covering approximately 338ac near Kells, Co Meath.

BayWa r.e. Ireland Ltd is seeking planning permission to develop the Fyanstown Solar Farm Limited project, located approximately five km east of Kells.

The project was first submitted for planning in 2024 and originally covered around 405ac.

The application was deemed withdrawn, with a smaller project resubmitted last month.

The proposed development spans grassland and tillage lands across the townlands of Fyanstown, Kilmainham, Rossmeen and Sedenrath.

Solar and batteries

The project will consist of a solar farm covering approximately 462,660 sq m of ground-mounted solar photovoltaic panels.

The project also includes a large energy storage compound.

This will contain 70 containerised energy storage modules along with associated plant and equipment, including 35 transformers, five auxiliary transformers, two spare parts containers and a medium voltage control and switching substation.

If granted, the solar farm is expected to generate enough renewable energy to power up to 27,000 homes and operate for 40 years.

A planning decision due by 29 April.
