Polaris Ranger diesel

Specification

The Polaris Ranger diesel is among the more stylish machines we tested. The lock and ride rear body design allows different accessories to be fixed into place in holes moulded into the body. A three-cylinder Yanmar diesel engine powers the Polaris Ranger Diesel. A belt-type CVT transmission is used, providing two working ranges with a top speed of 64km/h (40mph).

On-demand four-wheel drive is selected via a switch. Independent suspension provides 9in of travel and the Ranger diesel also has the highest ground clearance of all the UTVs on test. All suspension bushings can be greased.

The test machine featured three seat positions, plus side-safety nets in place of a door. An adjustable steering wheel is also standard. Standard cab configuration is just a roll-cage. The test machine had front and rear windscreens plus roof and there is a full-cab option. A road lighting kit is also optional.

Driving

The Polaris Ranger diesel was the liveliest of the diesel UTVs on test. It has a high top-speed of 64km/h (40mph) and is well capable of achieving those speeds. Poor front fender design though sees muck go everywhere. A small driver’s wiper with no washer did not help.

Time trial

It is no surprise that the Polaris was the fastest around our test track and among the most comfortable with its independent suspension all-round. It proved itself to be quite the performer but could spend a lot of time in the wash bay.
