It was steady as you in Co Sligo last year, with land prices unchanged on the year before.
The average price was €9,075/ac, up by just €15/ac on 2024, which meant there was no movement on the percentage scale compared to the previous year.
Prices have been on a gently rising trend in the county over the past decade.
Supply was down a little. We examined 69 farms for our report with a total of 1,776ac. This compared to 77 farms with a total of 1,955ac the year before.
We did our calculations on 19 holdings that sold by year end. Selling prices were in the range of €2,970/ac to €20,652/ac.
Prime holdings
Among the transactions of last year, E&M Scanlon sold a large number of land parcels, with prime holdings fetching €10,000/ac and above, and one property making €13,000/ac, sold by private treaty.
DM Auctions sold holdings by private treaty with small parcels in good demand, some fetching €15,000/ac and even up to €20,000/ac. REA McCarrick sold a number of holdings in the range of 20ac to 30ac, all by private treaty.
Drystock farmers – many of them part-time – as well as dairy farmers and business people with no direct involvement in farming are active buyers in Sligo.
Plain land in the county is making €4,500/ac to €5,500/ac, while good land is in the range of €7,000/ac to €10,000/ac. The belt of top-quality land between Coolaney and Ballymote can exceed €12,000/ac.
