This week’s sheep feature covers rules and regulations and fencing options for temporary grazing agreements. Costs involved vary significantly depending on the set-up, labour involved and volume of grass available. For example, areas that are securely fenced and require no labour in this regard will attract a higher price, as will better quality grazing on dry lands where grass utilisation and animal performance may be higher.

Varying rates

Typical daily rates range from 7c/day to 12c/day for lambs and 10c/day to 15c/day for mature animals. In cases typically involving smaller parcels, costs are a fraction of this, where the landowner wants to get the area grazed off fast before closing for winter and doesn’t want to purchase sheep; or where the owner of the animals has to carry out a lot of fencing to make boundaries stock-proof for sheep.

Deals are also done in cases on a charge over a period of time, with reported prices ranging anywhere from €20 to €25 per acre for short-term arrangements of a few months to €40 to €50 per month for longer-term agreements lasting until next February/March.

Remember, under the terms and conditions of the Areas of Natural Constraint, land cannot be rented out, but owners can take in animals to graze. It is also worth clearly agreeing at the outset how long the agreement is for, as the greatest issues reported are where sheep are left grazing beyond their welcome.
