A slight improvement in trade saw a 65% clearance with an average price of €2,700 at Carrick-on-Shannon. A large crowd of people gathered ringside for the show and sale, but along with having a limited spend, buyers were select in their choices.

The top price on the day went to Michael John Ball from Ballyhip, Louisburgh, Co Mayo. His 13-month-old Ballyhiprunner Niall, sired by Pirate, sold for €3,800. He was 6.5% for calving ease, along with a five-star terminal index and a €140 €uro-Star value.

The next best price was for Fiston son Churchfield M609 bred by John Nerney, Churchfield House, Elphin, Co Roscommon. This October 2016-born bull was five-star for both terminal and replacement index and only 6.2% for calving ease. He sold for €3,550.

Securing a price of €3,500 was Bellingham Nevin from Frances McKernan, Dundalk, Co Louth. This bull again provided an in-demand cross with Doonally New as the sire and Pirate as the grand sire.

Hitting €3,250 was Drumcrow Mick, bred by David Abbot, Drumcrow, Killeshandra, Co Cavan. His November 2016-born bull came second in his class on the day. Mick featured Derryolam Impeccable, Cornadrung Eric and Laheens Idol in his lineage. Again easy-calved bulls proved in demand with the 17-month-old below average at 6.8%.

The overall Charolais champion bull on the day was Clewbay12 Mega. This 19-month-old bull sold €2,600 and was exhibited by Charles Hughes, Lankhill, Westport, Co Mayo. His pedigree featured Vosgien, Cavelands Fenian and Padirac.

The reserve champion Tullaghan Max fetched a price of €3,100 and was bred by Micheal Daly, Wardhouse, Tullaghan, Co Leitrim. He was sired by Excellent and also featured Enfield Plexus and Padirac in the back breeding.

Only one Charolais heifer was on offer. Five-star New Girl was exhibited by Lewis Regan Tawley, Castlegal, Co Leitrim, She was sired by CF52 and sold for €2,000.

A small selection of Limousin bulls was on offer with the top price going to Patrick Murphy, Ross Glasson, Athlone, Co Westmeath. His five-star Lough Ree Leader was sired by Ampertaine Gigolo and made €2,000.
