Museums, libraries and other places of heritage will extend their hours into the night in celebration of Irish culture. Below is a roundup of some of the highlights.

Marina Carr reading in Wicklow

One of Ireland’s most famous female playwrights and author, Marina Carr, will be in Blessington, Co Wicklow, to read from a selection of her previous works.

Russborough House is the chosen location for this event because Carr has recently written the text for an Opera, Mary Gordon, where events of 1916 intertwine with folklore and mythology of the Blessington lakes, which can be seen from the house.

The Offaly native is well-known for her plays, which include By the Bog of Cats, The Mai and On Rafferty’s Hill.

Áras an Uachtaráin welcomes the public

Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina open their home tonight to the public. Unfortunately, not just anyone can turn up to the President’s house and expect to gain entry. Names were entered into a lottery, with a closing date of the 31 August.

Those lucky few who were chosen will enjoy not just the sights of the building’s interior, but a performance by the Smashing Times Theatre Company and music from Elsafty, Armstrong and Browne. The singing trio represent one of Ireland’s finest sean-nós singers, Roisin Elsafty, along with the Irish harp played by Siobhán Armstrong and with flutes, whistles and a 170-year-old pipe played by Ronan Browne.
