  • Dream Deli

    By Lilly Higgins

    Gill and Macmillan, €22.99

Lilly Higgins from Cork has always dreamed of owning a cafe. However, while waiting and planning, she decided to put all the yummy recipes that will be on her menu into a book. So, as you would suspect, it’s real cafe food, with tempting soups and salads, and sensational breakfasts and desserts, all of which sound devilishly tasty. We especially love the sound of her baked eggs with wilted spinach and parma ham, and if looks are anything to go by, Lilly’s New York style cheesecake is sure to impress the taste buds. We’ll be heading right in the direction of her cafe when it opens.

    The Irish Beef Book

By Pat Whelan and Katy McGuinness

    Gill and Macmillan, €22.99

If your meal simply isn’t complete without a piece of meat, then The Irish Beef Book is for you. Written by butcher Pat Whelan and chef Katy McGuinness, it covers every aspect of buying, preparing and cooking beef. Pat imparts his knowledge as a fifth generation farmer and butcher, providing all the information you need in order to find the best cuts of beef, while Katy McGuinness shows you how to create delicious dishes using every part of the animal. We especially love all the economical cuts of beef that are included in these mouth-watering meals. Fancy some braised beef shin with chorizo, or maybe you would prefer braised featherblade with parsley and horseradish? It also has more traditional dishes such as the ultimate steak sandwich. With beautiful photography taken on the farm and the kitchen, this unique book is one to celebrate.

    Eat West 2013

    www.eatwest2013.com €10

We love supporting Irish ventures and Eat West 2013 is certainly a book that does just that. It contains many signature recipes from our rugged west coast, all provided by a selection of producers and restaurateurs that span Galway, Mayo and Clare. From Graham Roberts of the Connemara Smokehouse, Sarah Bates of Sheridans Cheesemongers, as well as Martin Kinneavy and Martin Joe Kerrigan of Connemara Hill Lamb, it’s food knowledge at its best. Not only is it a great book for foodies everywhere, it’s also a great gift for those abroad who would like to remember the taste of home this Christmas. You can buy the book on www.eatwest.com, and all proceeds go to the ISPCC.

    Rachel’s Everyday Kitchen

    By Rachel Allen

    Harper Collins, €29.99

The Ballymaloe cookbooks are family treasures in many Irish homes, and this book is another classic to add to the list. Unlike the many other recent cookbooks that are divided into themes, this is a good old-fashioned one where everything is divided under headings such as poultry, ham and pork, beef and lamb, vegetables and sweet things. It has family favourites such as fantastic fishcakes, a quick chicken casserole, cheesy meatballs with spaghetti, and iced strawberry meringue cake. As well as presenting beautiful family menus, Rachel also gives great tips on meal planning, cooking in batches, lunchbox ideas and understanding food symbols.

Add in recipes for the perfect Sunday lunch and brunch, and the only place you’ll be going to for the weekend is your very own kitchen. CL
