The Irish Hereford Breed Society hosted their premier sale in Tullamore over the weekend and trading proved tough for bulls and heifers. It is thought much of this is due to other highly successful production sales for the breed over the past two months.

Bulls were first into the ring and saw less than 30% of the 35 bulls forward find new homes. Top of these was a price of €4,000 for Tom Brennan's Balleen Wayfair. This stylish young bull is a son of Towra Brilliant and out of the homebred cow Balleen Maeve 795.

David Larkin was next in line when he saw his two bulls sold for €3,800 and €3,500 respectively. These two March 2018 born bulls are sons of the herd's stock bull Cedar Liam.

Taking the overall male championship on the day was Griananpoll 1 Starman who sold for €3,000. Bred by Tom and Anselm Fitzgerald, Starman is sired by home bred 'Grianan Parker' and out of the successful Orange family line.

Onto the females and unfortunately it was a similar sight in terms of clearance rate with only five of the 23 heifers on offer meeting trade. Topping this was a €3,500 call for John Appelbe’s heifer Appel 1 Super Star. This stylish heifer is sired by former national champion Solpoll 1 Lawman.

Taking the female championship was Kilsunny Doreens Odette from Edward Dudley. This heifer was sired by former herd stock bull Glaslough Judge and sold for €3,300.
