A comprehensive, ready-to-use pig farm, with a separate breeding and finishing unit is up for sale in Waterford under the guidance of both Mike Brady of Brady Group and Margaret Harty of Harty Auctioneers, Dungarvan.

Situated in Caherbrack, Ballinamult, Co Waterford, the separate units on the farm have an ideal location for a number of reasons. Firstly, they’re located mid-way between Dungarvan and Clonmel and have easy access to all main routes in the locality. Both units are also circa 1km away from each other, a desirable bio-security feature in terms of disease prevention. This holding is isolated in the best sense of the word, in that the nearest pig unit is 10km away. This, according to Brady, may be a good selling point as the chance of disease is reduced.

The breeding unit.

Breeding unit

The breeding unit has the capacity to hold 1,000 sows, with a separate gilt-rearing facility for rearing pigs to 30kg. A Big Dutchman computerised wet feeder can also be found here, with a mixing system on-site. There is also feed and slurry storage. Three 20t feed bins, in addition to separate storage facilities for two liquid ingredients reside here. There is slurry storage underneath the building that has the capability of holding one week of slurry before it is stored outside.

Electricity comes from a 250Kw wind turbine on-site. Brady also informed Irish Country Living that an additional farmhouse and farmyard are available if required, with land for expansion to the south of the holding.

The fattening unit of the pig farm.

Fattening unit

The fattening unit is comprehensive, with facilities for up to 6,000 pigs from 30kg to finish.

This site also contains a Big Dutchman computerised wet feeding system, with additional facilities to store three liquid ingredients, as well as a feed mill. Similar to the breeding facility, one week of slurry storage can be found under the building, with the larger on-site storage able to hold slurry for between four to five months.

With six, 30t bins and two 250t bins used for raw material storage as well a facility to store 120t of finished product with offloading facilities, storage isn’t an issue. There is also land for expansion available with this unit.

Finally, staff accommodation is located here. This residence has bedrooms and two reception rooms, a kitchen and living room.

Interest

So far interest has been steady, but no official bids have been made. Up to 10 parties have viewed the units, with three currently accessing finance. With a shortage of fattening space in Ireland, some interested parties have looked at both units with the view of converting the breeding unit into a finishing space.

Offering

Offered for sale by private treaty, it is jointly handled by Mike Brady of Brady Group and Margaret Harty of Harty Auctioneers Dungarvin. The final guide on the holding is €2m.

They are IPC licensed and meet slurry storage requirements.
