Top three-year-old returns

  • Bill Toomey’s Touch of Panache, three-year-old gelding by Conthargos (dam by Golden Master) €13,500.
  • Luke O’Neill’s Unnamed, three-year-old gelding by Lagans OBOS Quality (dam by Coevers Diamond Boy) €13,000.
  • Maurice Griffin’s Allenstown Jorado three-year-old gelding by Jorado (dam by Cavalier Royale) €12,200.
  • On the back of some very lively trade for older horses and four-year-olds, the second week at Goresbridge was steadier.

With the focus on the three-year-olds demand was more selective, with the result that both the clearance and the average slipped from last year.

That said, the sale twelve months ago was the best seen in decades, and last week’s figures were still significantly higher than any recent years.

There were plenty of five figure prices over the three days, and it was good to see buyers returning to the venue both from mainland Europe and the UK.

Looking at the figures, the clearance rate closed at 59% (65% in 2021), while the average also decreased slightly to €5,078 (€5,265 in 2021).

    Sale toppers

Having made the headlines twelve months ago, Co Waterford breeder Bill Toomey repeated the feat when his homebred son of Conthargos topped the figures at €13,500.

Although this price did not emulate his full brother’s €25,000 return, it was good on the day, and Toomey was happy enough.

The gelding is the second foal out of the Kings Master sired dam Faded Grandeur, and looked well bought by Warwickshire based Carron Nicol of European Sport Horses (UK).

    Value and quality

Having returned to buy in Ireland after decades of sourcing in Belgium and Holland, Nicol accounted for a total of twelve lots over the course of the three day sale.

Citing both the value and the quality on offer as the attraction, Nicol also snapped up an unnamed son of Lagans OBOS Quality out of the traditionally bred Sea Lady Maid by Coevers Diamond Boy for €13,000.

The accolade for the top priced filly went to Maurice Griffin’s Allenstown Jorado by the young stallion Jorado, who looked well bought by an Irish cash customer at €12,200.
