Atkins is based on the Corrrighrohane Road in Cork. It’s a family-run company established for over 130 years and originally owned by the Atkins and Wolfe families. Since then, the company has been passed on through five generations.

“We employ a team of 65 people from the area that are spread out in all parts of the company, from marketing to sales and distribution,” says Mark Wolfe, managing director of Atkins.

“Our company is a distributor of both farm machinery, such as Fendt, McHale and Pöttinger, and garden machinery, supplying well-known brands like Husqvarna, Honda and Kubota.”

Big News for Atkins

At the beginning of February, Atkins opened two stores on the Cork Road in Bandon and The Mill Road in Fermoy. Niall Kelleher is the main lawnmower salesperson in Cork and Robert Keniry is the main salesperson in Fermoy.

“We employ two people in our Bandon shop and three people in our Fermoy shop. They specialise in both farm and garden machinery. In 2013, we won the Dealer of The Year Award,” added Mark.

“Our price range depends on our product. Our Husqvarna and Honda ranges would be slightly more expensive than our Kubota range. But you really do get what you pay for, quality-wise. In our Husqvarna range, the walk-behind lawnmowers are €399.

“The autumn mower is a robot lawnmower with a docking station. A small disc operates itself working at certain times of the day mowing your lawn for you, meaning one thing: less man power is needed. The Husqvarna ride-on mower range is on the more expensive side, ranging from €2,299. Our Husqvarna and Kubota ranges are both a distinctive orange colour, while the Honda brand is a striking red.

“All our brands have a two-year standard manufacturing warranty. We take great care to ensure the best quality service is provided to our customers,” explains Mark.

Safety Features

“Our entire range of lawnmowers is equipped with the most up-to-date safety features. The mower blades won’t engage if the operator is not seated and the grass box is not closed. You also won’t be able to start the mower if the blades are in an engaged setting,” explains Mark.

Choosing A Mower

“When choosing the right lawnmower for our customers we would often ask what size garden they have, the layout of their garden, how frequently it is cut and how high-quality a finish they want on their grass. It depends on the operator, the kind of lawnmower they are looking for and whether they’re an amateur or a professional. It’s also useful to know the dimensions of the operator to define which machine would suit them best,” says Mark.

Open day

To promote the company and to advertise its new range of products, Atkins will host an open weekend in Carrigrohane, Cork, on 28-29 March.

Maintain your machine

  • An annual service is recommended and can be done at any of the three Atkins store locations in Cork, Bandon and Fermoy. The service costs from €60 and is carried out by professionals on-site.
  • The quality of fuel is hugely important to ensure your mower is working at its optimum level. Petrol left in a tank for a long period of time leaves deposits in the engine that will eventually shorten its life. As an alternative, you can buy a product called Aspen petrol. It is distilled to a higher specification than other petrols, meaning there are less impurities and deposits left in the engine. It’s more expensive, priced at €6 for one litre and €20 for five litres, but it has its benefits. Aspen is a more sustainable, greener fuel and can be purchased from any mower shop.
