With increased demand for Aubrac bulls by dairy farmers, this year’s Aubrac stand will feature the breed’s use in the dairy herd.

The breed produces excellent-quality beef calves in the dairy herds. Combine this with short-gestation, easy-calving and good hardy calves, the society says the breed offers a great choice for the sector.

While last year’s stand featured three Aubrac-cross-Holstein bulls from the herd of John Barron (New Ross), this year it is reporting back with the results of their kill-outs.

Also on display will be more prime examples of dairy-crosses. Breeders from around the country will also be available to talk to farmers on their experiences.

Tullamore winners

The society will again be displaying the Tullamore Show winners, with overall champion Boleyrock Lilac on display with her April-born calf at foot. They will be joined by some more champion Aubracs.

They haven’t forgotten the suckler farmer either. The tent will feature some nice examples of Aubrac-crosses from the suckler herd.

More and more Aubrac bulls are being selected for AI, with members on hand to talk through what’s now available.

Johnstown Loyd 1039 (AU4563) is the latest Aubrac bull to become available in ICBF’s GeneIreland programme.

Rated €181 on the replacement index and €127 on the terminal index, sired by Heritier and grandsire Morgues Ultra, he is a very impressive test sire.

Don’t forget the annual draw for an Aubrac heifer. This year, 19-month-old Glenford Mia is the top prize in the draw, with the winner announced on the Thursday.
