The Limousin breed put down another good day at the market in Carlisle over the weekend, where 108 bulls were sold to average £6,372. While this was down over £1,000 on the previous year’s exceptional sale, an added four bulls were sold.

Strong trade was seen throughout the day, with commercial buyers willing to pay up to five-figure sums for their bull of choice.

This was particularly evident for the junior bulls, with the average settling at £7,514. Even more of a testament to the trade on the day was that nearly half of the bulls sold made £5,000 or more.

However, much of the overall drop in average price was due to the drop in the number of bulls making high five-figure sums. A total of 15 bulls sold for five-figure sums, back from 20 on the same sale last year.

Going home from Carlisle particularly happy is Northern Ireland breeder Gareth Small. The Co Down man saw his very first registered calf Strathearnred Nidge go on to claim the overall supreme championship under judge James Callion.

This is an accolade many breeders spend a lifetime trying to accomplish, so for a breeder to do it with their first calf deserves massive recognition.

Nidge, a July 2017-born bull, is sired by the 45,000gns Ampertaine Jamboree and out of Ampertaine Elgin daughter Bellingham Jewel.

While Nidge may have been the first pedigree registered calf, his dam Jewel has bred many champion show calves which have sold to a top of £4,000.

Inside the sale ring, Nidge met his reserve at £7,000gns, selling to Welsh pedigree breeders Colin and Terry Lewis, who will use him on their Garyvaughan herd.

Topping trade on the day was the 50,000gns Cloughhead Neville from Tom and Phil Hutton. This marks the highest price achieved by the herd for a bull to date.

Part of this high price was driven by the out-cross breeding of his sire Gultime. This French-born bull was imported by the Cloughhead herd in 2012 and has bred other sons as high as 18,000gns.

A June 2017-born bull, Neville’s dam Cloughhead Hogmanay is a Wilodge Cerberus daughter out of a full sister to the 42,000gns Cloughhead Umpire.

The second-prizewinner was secured by the noted Wilodge herd of Paul and Christine Tippetts, based in Shropshire.

Ian Handley’s Gunnerfleet herd also put down a day to remember, seeing three bulls sell for five-figure sums.

Top of these and second-top overall price was the 17,000gns Gunnerfleet Next. This bull was awarded the junior championship in the show ring the previous day and is a son of the 24,000gns Ballinloan Jaegerbomb.

Dam behind the August 2017-born bull is the homebred Gunnerfleet Jelomie, a daughter of the 24,000gns Gunnerfleet Eros.

Second-best from the Gunnerfleet herd was the 12,000gns Gunnerfleet National. This stylish bull was sired by popular sire Plumtree Fantastic, which has bred bulls to 28,000gns. Born September 2017, National heads to the commercial herd of Messrs Richardson, Low Garth, Cockermouth.

Securing the last of the five-figure sums for Gunnerfleet was the 11,000gns Navigator. Another son of Ballinloan Jaegerbomb, he also goes back to the 24,000gns Gunnerfleet Eros.

One of the picks of the yard, Goldies Novelty, was next in line when he sold for 16,000gns. Awarded the reserve intermediate and reserve overall the previous day, he was the pick of Neil and Stuart Barclay who secured him for their Harestone herd.

Sired by Ampertaine Gigolo, who needs no introduction, his dam line goes back to the noted cow Goldies Vitality. This topped a very good day for Mr Bruce Goldie who sold four bulls to average £13,340.

Matching this price was his pen mate Goldies Nelson. This young bull’s pedigree featured similar breeding to the reserve overall champion, with Gigolo as the grandsire and the dam also going back to Vitality on both sides. This first-prizewinner was secured by Messrs Lear from Creslow, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

Also hitting the five-figure mark from the Goldies pen was Goldies Nevelle, which was knocked down at 10,000gns. Sired by Kaprico Eravelle, the dam’s pedigree features Foxhillfarm Irishlad and also the aforementioned Goldies Vitality.

Farmers Journal Scotland farm profit programme participant Andrew Gammie also put down a good day, selling two ET full brothers for 14,000gns and 13,000gns.

These two bulls were sired by Dinmore Immense, with the dam Wilodge Vantastic daughter Brockhurst Holy. A full brother to these two bulls also sold privately to the Ronick herd following a successful show career.

Leading the prices from the two was the second-prizewinner Westpit Nevada, which sold to the Hartsidenew pedigree herd, while Westpit Naville, the previous day’s reserve junior champion, sold for 13,000gns to the Redpath pedigree herd.

Just behind and on a final bid of 12,500gns was another by the popular Ballinloan Jaegerbomb in the shape of the August 2017-born Huntershall Nando from Stephen Nixon.

Nando is out of the Requin-sired Huntershall Jiffy, a full sister to the 22,000gns Huntershall Geronimo.

Pedigree breeder Paul Cairns paid 12,000gns for the September 2017-born Lenagh Nitro to join his Plumtree herd. Brought out by Northern Ireland breeder Mark Stewart, Nitro is the first son offered from the Lenagh herd by the AI sire Cloughhead Tommy, while his dam is a Vantastic daughter.

The Trueman team from Northern Ireland were just behind this, securing 11,000gns for the top of their pen.

The Savage family’s Trueman Neptune is sired by Mereside Lorenzo, while the dam is the prolific Vantastic daughter Trueman Euphonium, who has bred numerous champions to date.

This bull was one of the widest in the yard and was knocked down to the Tradwell herd.

Matching Neptune at the money was the best of the Grahams’ outfit, Grahams Nathan. The ET son of Claragh Franco and French-bred Cousine was the pick of the Haltcliffe herd.

Closing off the five-figure sums, two bulls shared the price tag of 10,500gns. First at the money was the senior bull Impulsive Niall from Steven Wilson. Sired by Loosebeare Justin, he is out of Cloughhead Umpire-sired Haltcliffe Inlet.

Matching that 10,500gns bid was Homebyres Nisbet, a May 2017-born bull from father and son duo John and John Logan. Got by AI, Nisbet is by Lowerfrydd Empire, while his dam is Homebyres Jaybeth, a heifer daughter of the 15,000gns Homebyres Hawick.
