Saturday’s general cattle and sheep sale at Headford Mart, Co Galway, saw a relatively positive entry of stock numbers-wise, with over 489 heads of cattle on offer.
There was a mix of light store cattle, heavy forward cattle and cull cows available, while a small entry of weanlings were also present.
All types of stock were met with a strong trade due to keen demand seen from leading export buyers, farmers purchasing for grass and factory agents.
Keen demand was seen for the small number of bull weanlings on offer, with top-end calves suitable for export clearing €5/kg with relative ease for calves between eight and 12 months of age weighing in the main between 300kg and 350kg.
Farmer buyers were active for these better-quality types, with the top price per kilo paid for a 330kg Limousin-cross selling for €2,080 (€6.30/kg).
Continental-type store bullocks generally sold between €4/kg and €4.65/kg, with the top-end of prices being seen for U grading Charolais and Limousin types hitting two years old and weighing close to 550kg.
Angus and Hereford-cross bullocks were the main lots to sell closer to the €4/kg mark, while Friesian bullocks sold at circa €3.30/kg.
Continental store heifers sold from €4.20 to a high of €4.85/kg, with dairy-beef types generally selling between €3.70/kg and €4.11/kg.
The majority of heifers on offer were 18 to 24 months of age and suitable for summer grazing and finishing off grass. The top end of price was paid for quality Charolais-crosses with good weight for age.
A small number of spring 2025-born dairy-beef heifers met a mixed trade, with €3.70/kg to €4/kg being paid in the main.
There was a buoyant trade for cull cows on offer, with a mix of both finished heavy suckler and dairy types as well as more store cows requiring feeding.
