With 512 cattle on offer, the recent rise in beef price put renewed confidence in buyers of stores, while heavy cattle were also keenly sought after by factory agents at New Ross Mart on Saturday last.

Cull cows in particular were met with a sharper trade than the week previous, with price increases of €30 to €70/head seen.

Continental beef cows sold from €1,500 to €2,560/head over their weight, while store-type cows of the same type sold for €1,270 to €1,450 over their weight.

Friesisian cows sold from €760 to €1,320/head above their weight, with an average of €2.72/kg paid for Friesian cows weighing 600kg to 700kg, while heavier more-fleshed types weighing above 600kg averaged €2.92/kg.

Several lots of beef cows sold above €3.50/kg, with a high of €4.02/kg paid for a Limousin cow weighing 665kg that sold for €2,670.

Finished bullocks

Finished bullocks sold between €1,760 and €2,360/head with their weight, with continental store bullocks selling between €1,180 and €2,080/head with their weight.

Angus and Hereford-cross types from dairy cows saw store bullocks trading between €1,050 and €1,640/head with their weight.

For Friesian bullocks, heavier types traded between €1,460 and €1,780/head with their weight, while lighter store types traded between €860 and €1,220/head with their weight, with the keenest demand being for heavier lots.

In the heifer ring, demand was again high for finished types, with these lots selling between €1,640 and €2,090/head with their weight, while continental store heifers traded well and sold from €1,100 to €1,680/head with the weight.

Dairy-beef heifers traded between €970 to €1,540/head with their weight.

Some 183 calves on offer saw a strong trade for all lots.

Friesian bulls traded between €330 and €590/head, with continental bulls selling from €460 to €880/head.

Hereford and Angus bulls sold from €400 to €810/head, with their female counterparts trading from €260 to a high of €830/head.

Continental heifers saw a price variance from €290/head to a high of €715/head.
