Ballymote Mart held its October show and sale of weanlings on Friday last.

Trade topped at €5,500 for a Belgian Blue-cross heifer weighing 470kg.

Trade was exceptional for quality lots throughout the day, with a number northern buyers competing for quality heifers.

In total, 11 heifers sold for over €3,000/head, with over €10/kg paid on several occasions.

"Trade varied for your general run of heifers, with between €5/kg and €6/kg paid for some exceptional show-type heifers, but we had plenty of buyers for your more farmer-type feeding heifers,” said mart manager David Faughnan.

“A good share of the Belgian Blue-cross heifers sold for over €6/kg. Colour and quality dictated a lot, with your orange U grade Charolais and Limousin-cross heifer weanlings also hitting the €6/kg mark, with plainer-type heifers selling from €4.80/kg to €5.50/kg.

“Lighter bull weanlings between 300kg and 350kg sold the best, with quality lots hitting €6/kg, while heavier bulls weighing over the 400kg mark sold from €4.70/kg up to €5.50kg, with a number of larger finishers after these,” David added.
