BEET Ireland intends to site its new sugar beet processing facility in Co Kildare.

The Irish Farmers Journal understands that the group, which has been working towards the restoration of the Irish sugar industry, is poised to purchase a site in Ballyburn Upper, on the edge of Castledermot in Kildare.

The site is next to the M9 motorway, and can serve the three growing areas identified by BEET Ireland’s research – east Munster, south Leinster, and the arable sector in north Leinster that previously grew little beet.

The site is owned by Dan Morrissey Ireland Ltd, a well-known concrete/quarrying company that has been in receivership since last year.

This has complicated the purchase, but it is understood that almost all hurdles have now been crossed.
