We chat to Duncan Morrison and David Lawrie from the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs about their 'Cultivating Change' conference in Stirling.
Duncan Morrison: “We visited some interesting farms adapting to change in different ways; renewable energy, using grass differently and increasing yields. At Old Leckie they were diversifying to spread risk a little bit. That’s probably something I could do myself as I specialise in suckler cows at home. It’s all about analysing and doing your costs. If you don’t assess what you are doing you are not going to make any money because you don’t know where you are going.
“The young farmers weekend is a great way to mix with people from all over the country including banks, accountants and various sponsors. It gives you a chance to broaden your horizons.”
David Lawrie: “I thought it was an excellent weekend, I was encouraged to see the members engaged given the current political situation. Young farmers here seem to be looking forward to change and it looks like they are going to embrace Brexit. I went on the dairy farm walk, Sophie and Alan had a great story having only come in to dairying three years ago. They looked at it with such a fresh perspective. Coming from a family dairy it was good to see a more objective approach without getting hung up on tradition.”
