The annual fatstock show and sale of dry cows and heifers in Roscrea Mart met a cracking trade on Friday last.

This seven-year-old Limousin-cross cow, born March 2011 and weighing 1,050kg, sold for €2,380 (€2.27/kg).

Manager Michael Harty reported that the standard of cattle on offer was excellent and that this laid a strong foundation for the trade to excel.

This large-framed Charolais cow, weighing 1,100kg and born March 2009, sold for €2,100 (€1.91/kg).

The presence of northern buyers who were very active for well-conformed cows and heifers also inserted added competition.

This 820kg Shorthorn-cross young cow born April 2016 sold for €1,400 (€1.71/kg).

The trade for an entry of over 230 cows returned prices for good-quality cows well in excess of those quoted by factories.

This 635kg Blonde d’Aquitaine cow born December 2015 sold for €1,270 (€2/kg).

Analysis of Martbids prices showed that 10 cows topped the €2,000 mark, while another 25 cows sold from €1,600 to €1,990.

This young Hereford-cross cow, born March 2017 and weighing 735kg, sold for €1,050 (€1.43/kg).

Prices for these animals, many of which weighed between 750kg and 950kg, averaged €2.24/kg and ranged from €2/kg to €2.60/kg.

This well-conformed Charolais-cross heifer, born January 2017 and weighing 935kg, sold for €2,410 (€2.58/kg).

Another 60 cows sold from €1,300 to €1,580, with prices averaging €1.84/kg and ranging from €1.70/kg to €2.00/kg.

This super-quality Belgian Blue-cross heifer, weighing 880kg and born February 2017, sold for €2,360 (€2.68/kg).

The majority of cows on offer in this bracket were bred by Limousin and Belgian Blue sires.

While the lower prices ranging from €1,100 to €1,300 may not have grabbed the headlines, there was still a fantastic trade, with prices averaging €1.70/kg for cows weighing from 640kg to 770kg.

This 745kg Limousin heifer born August 2017 sold for €1,970 (€2.64/kg).

Plainer-quality beef-bred slaughter-fit cows sold from €1.50/kg to €1.60/kg, while an entry of about 50 Friesian cows sold from €1.30/kg to €1.45/kg for the better-quality lots, with a dozen back to €1.15/kg.

This good-quality Belgian Blue-cross heifer, weighing 535kg and born March 2018, sold for €1,400 (€2.62/kg).

Belgian Blue and Limousin cattle also dominated in the awarding of rosettes and featured among the top prices paid.

This 555kg Charolais heifer born September 2018 sold for €1,355 (€2.44/kg).

Eight heifers topped €2,000 per head, with over 50 more selling for between €1,500 and €1,990. On a price-per-kilo basis, the top price paid was €3.42/kg for a 465kg show-quality Limousin heifer which sold for €1,590.

This Limousin-cross heifer weighing 645kg and born February 2018 sold for €1,440 (€2.23/kg).

Over 90 top-quality heifers secured a price between €2.40/kg and €3.00/kg.

This Charolais-cross heifer, weighing 495kg and born March 2018, sold for €1,020 (€2.06/kg).

The trade for non-show animals was brisk. Good-quality spring 2018-born R and U grading forward store heifers weighing upwards of 550kg sold from €2.20/kg to €2.35/kg, with younger autumn 2018-born heifers weighing 450kg to 530kg also falling in this bracket.

This 565kg Limousin heifer born April 2018 sold for €1,560 (€2.76/kg).
Plainer-quality types, including some slaughter-fit Angus and Hereford heifers, sold from €2.00/kg to €2.15/kg on average.

This Simmental cow, weighing 820kg and born November 2011, sold for €1,390 (€1.70/kg).

The fatstock show and sale of bullocks will take place on Friday 17 January.

Commission rates are €9 to the buyer and €10 to €15 to the seller.

The supreme champion of the fatstock show and sale in Roscrea was this 900kg Belgian Blue-cross heifer which was born in March 2018 and sold for €2,500 (€2.78/kg).
