The weekly weanling sale took place in Mid-Tip Mart Thurles last week, with prices topping at €3.17/kg.

This was for a lot of no less than 10 animals with an average weight of 213kg. The group of weanling bulls ranged in age from four to seven months of age and were all Limousin-cross.

Speaking following the sale, mart manager Martin Ryan said: “The lighter stock are making as much as the heavier ones. It seems people have a price in their head of what they’re willing to pay.”

He added that, overall, the sale was very strong for the animals on offer.

“We have really started to see the lesser end of stock coming out now. With prices strong, most of the quality weanlings came early on this autumn.

“There’s a share more bucket-fed calves coming to the market. While prices may not be as high as up the country, they’re very strong down here when you take into account the type of cow they’re out of.”

Due to those better weanlings coming early, weanling numbers are back on the same time last year.

However, this is offset by general cattle numbers holding tough in Thurles for this time of year.

Top price

The top price mentioned above helped to boost average price for weanling bulls from 200kg to 300kg up to €2.12/kg.

This increased to just shy of €3/kg when you look at the top third of lots only.

Lots in the bottom third of prices ranged from €1.35/kg to €1.80kg, with all these pure dairy stock.

Heifers of the same weight boasted an average of €2.15/kg.

Prices here were led by a pair of Limousin heifers weighing 225kg and sold for €550 (€2.44/kg).

Animals weighing between 300kg and 400kg again made up the majority of lots.

Bull weanling prices in this division were led by continental-bred cattle, with Charolais-, Limousin- and Blonde-crosses ranging between €2.20 and €2.50/kg.

Angus- and Hereford-crosses were a shade behind, ranging from €1.95/kg to €2.10/kg. Overall average for bulls came in at €2.06/kg.

Heifer average for 300kg to 400kg rested at €2.01/kg. This price difference with bulls was maintained across the breeds, with traditional breeds back slightly more.
