Last month, the Irish Farmers Journal reported that the Irish Charolais Cattle Society was to host a national calf show in October as an avenue for breeders to exhibit stock due to the cancellations of summer shows.

The society has now made the decision to cancel this show.

Set to take place in Elphin, the proposed show was hoped to be run in accordance with restrictions in place at the time.

In a statement released by the society, it said: “Unfortunately, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the council of the Irish Charolais Cattle Society [has] made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s national Charolais calf show.”

Disappointing

It said that although disappointing for everyone, the decision was made in accordance with Government and HSE guidelines in place at present and it was felt that it would be irresponsible of the society to proceed with a show at this time.

Earlier this week, the Carrick Winter Fair also made the decision to cancel the show, due to take place in November.

This now means that the only remaining shows which may take place in 2020 are those held as part of premier sales.

Having spoken with a number of societies, the Irish Farmers Journal understands that many of these will also be subject to restrictions at the time and that they may choose to go with a sale-only format.
