The Salers Cattle Society will this year have its stand at Block No 1, Row 21, Stand No 462. The stand will exhibit a number of the breed’s top animals in Ireland, including Salers pedigree cows with calves at foot and pedigree heifers that were winners from the regional shows, as well as a full French-bred Salers cow with calf at foot.

In the crossbred section, on display will be various animals including a Charolais cow with a Salers calf and a pedigree Salers cow with Charolais bull calf. Also featuring will be a crossbred Salers cow with a Charolais bull calf.

This has always been a huge attraction for visitors, to see just how the Salers breed works on both a pedigree and commercial platform.

It offers a great chance for farmers to talk to the breeders and discuss their own situations and how to use the Salers breed to the best advantage on their farm. To help the process, there will be members of the council there each day to help answer any questions.

The society will be making the Salers for Suckling journal available for free. This is a very informative 60-page colour book all about Salers, with great articles and photos from farmers using the breed and showing why Salers animals can work on your farm.

A raffle will take place in the tent on the final day for a 17-month-old pedigree Salers heifer (valued at €2,000) or €1,500 cash. Tickets cost €2 each or three tickets for €5 and will be available over the three days at the stand or from any Salers member.

The society will also have tickets for sale for its Salers social night and dinner dance, which will be held on Sunday 29 October 2017 (bank holiday weekend) in The Sheraton Hotel, Athlone.

The society will be taking entries for its annual crossbred sale in Gort Mart, Co Clare, on Saturday 21 October. Society council members will be on hand to take entries over the three days.

This sale is usually held on a Thursday evening but, due to such large entries, it has been changed to a Saturday.

This year it will be a show and sale for crossbred cattle. It always attracts a large number of top-quality breeding females, so anybody in the market for Salers cattle it stands as a must-attend event.

Adding to that point, the society will also be accepting entries to its annual pedigree show and sale which takes place on Saturday 18 November, in GVM Mart, Tullamore.
