Despite the immediate effect of Brexit on the Irish mushroom industry, Raymond and Leslie Codd have set out ambitious plans for the future.

“We’d planned on expanding into the UK and the Brexit vote really boosted the idea,” Leslie Codd told the Guild of Agricultural Journalists on Friday. “We’ve agreed to buy a producer in Liverpool that supplies Morrisons.”

They are also investing in a compost facility in Northern Ireland. Coupled with the planned expansion of their production area in Tullow, this will see the business move from a staff of 225 people to 400 people.

Codd’s expansion plan

  • Compost facility in NI.
  • Expansion into UK market.
  • Expansion of production area in Ireland with new packing facility.
  • Codd Mushrooms is the largest supplier of mushrooms to the Irish market. Over half of all mushrooms consumed in Ireland are produced by the family farm. It produces 260,000lb of mushrooms each week in 38 production rooms all under one roof.
