Pig farmers are being advised by Teagasc to pay close attention to all advice from the HSE and other authorities to safeguard the health of owners and their staff.

“This is firstly in the interest of their own health but, as a consequence, also for smooth operation of pig units,” said pig specialist Ciaran Carroll.

“Pig farmers and their staff are generally very tuned in to biosecurity anyway,” he said. “Owners are now instructing staff about guidelines on washing hands and similar precautions.”

There are currently no issues regarding supply of feed or other services, he said.

“We haven’t heard any issues raised by suppliers. But pig farmers should watch out for any updates or advice that is issued by suppliers or other relevant bodies.”

Some pig farmers say they are concerned that slaughtering could be interrupted if key staff at a slaughter plant become ill.

On this basis, they are sending pigs for slaughter immediately they are fit.

Poultry farmers are also used to following strict biosecurity protocols and are implementing latest advice from the HSE and other authorities.
