I farm: “My boys, Thomas and Glen, run a commercial flock of about 800 cheviot mules.

This week: “I’ve been feeding animals. Thomas has 70 pedigree Texels which are due to start lambing this week so we’ve been getting organised and getting feeders full.

Lambing: “We scanned the commercial flocks a few days ago. One was 176% and the other about 160%. We’re quite happy, and the ewes are in good nick.

New income streams: “We started this place from scratch about 20 years ago and started farming tourists! When it became evident the boys wanted to farm, I managed to get another place near Crieff. They know that what we’ve got won’t make a living for them, so between the two of them they shear about 20,000 sheep a year as well.

Olympics: “The boys and Eve have had to be full-time curlers for the past four to five months. They’ve been on a training programme since August. It’s probably a one-off, but for something as big as this, you have to make sacrifices. Another few weeks and we’ll try to get back to normal.

Favourite piece of kit: “The quad bike is one of the greatest things since sliced bread. I was born and brought up on a hill farm, and when I think off the miles we used to walk, it’s completely different now.

Quotable quote: “Farming is definitely a lifestyle, not an occupation. I was born into it, and the kids were born into it. We did try to get them proper jobs, but there was only one thing they were ever going to do.”
