Solid prices for milk powders pushed Tuesday’s New Zealand Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction index on to a 1.5% increase in what represented the first index rise that the trading event has witnessed since mid-March.

Whole milk powder averaged €3,197/t, some 2.2% higher than the last GDT auction held on 21 April, with skimmed milk powder ending the day’s trading up 3% at an average price of €3,032/t.

The small volume of butter milk powder traded saw a 9% price jump to €2,963/t, but butter itself slipped 2.6% to €4,722/t.

Anhydrous milk fat reached average prices of €5,522/t, which was up 1.1% on the previous auction, and cheddar took a 3.6% tumble to €3,941/t.

Tuesday’s sale of 13,743t of dairy commodities came off the back of two auction index declines, the most recent being 21 April’s 2.7% decrease and the earlier being a 3.4% drop a fortnight prior.

However, despite the fluctuations in recent auctions, the GDT index has risen over 20% since the final auction event of 2025.
