With grass growth responding to an increase in temperatures right across the country, the focus is slowly turning to sourcing silage wrap and pit covers.

First-cut silage is likely to be delayed after the sluggish growth this spring, with very little volumes of wrap moved so far. Those who have traded are reporting an average price of €85/roll. However, prices between €82 and €88 have been quoted, with the lower prices available for bulk orders. These are in line with last year’s prices, but with co-ops yet to get in large stocks of wrap, they report prices may be open to change.

Prices for pit covers have remained fairly static since last year, with a 60ftx120ft cover costing €150 with most co-ops.

Prices as low as €145 and as a high of €170 have also been quoted. Smaller 36ftx75ft covers cost approximately €50, with a high of €63 reported in the midlands.

Fertiliser

Co-ops are reporting that fertiliser demand is practically non-existent, with an upturn expected when first-cut silage begins over the coming weeks.

Of the fertiliser moving, the majority is 18:6:12, which is trading mainly at €390/t. Prices as low as €370/t have been quoted. However, this is dependent on quantities purchased and prompt payment.

Compound fertilisers are more popular than straight nitrogen as the season progresses, with 24:2.5:5 costing approximately €385/t, while 27:2.5:5 is €10 further back at €375/t with the majority of merchants.

There is very little urea left in merchants’ yards, with demand among farmers also low. Prices for stocks that are remaining is ranging from €340/t to €380/t.

CAN is ranging from €270/t to €290/t in the most parts, with 10:10:20 localised around €400/t.

As always, variation exists among co-ops and it is important to shop around when purchasing farm supplies. Prompt payment and larger orders will also give you more of a bargaining tool when dealing with co-ops and will allow you to get the best price.
