It’s very easy to get in a rut and always wear the same makeup, sticking to the same colours and playing it safe. But why not be a wee bit daring and try some new colours and styles? For example, if you have never worn a bright lipstick before, now is the time. Small, easy, makeup changes can really make a huge difference to you and your confidence.

To start – flawless-looking skin. To create this – foundation and concealer. This is especially the case as we get older, often our skin tone is never the same colour all over.

Eyes

Once you have your foundation and concealer in place, it’s time to focus on your eyes. They are the windows to your soul and you want to emphasise their beauty.

If you are scared of eyeshadow, a quick tip I adore is simply to put eyeliner – a colour that compliments your eye colour - along the very top of the lash line as close to the lashes as possible.

A favourite trick of mine to make your eyes look bigger, is to use an eyelash curler

Start the line from the inner corner of the top lid and then continue out to the outer corner. Never let the line go below the corner of the bottom lid, as this will only drag the eyes down. Always lightly blend over the eyeliner with a clean makeup blending brush or a cotton bud to soften the line. This will instantly widen your eyes and brighten them.

Your eyebrows really do frame your face, especially if you add a touch of colour to make them look thicker and shapely

Some ladies are scared of them but honestly once you have curled your lashes a few times you will wish you had started using them earlier. Boots sell them and most cosmetic brands have created their own. I curl my lashes after applying the eyeshadow/eyeliner and before I apply two or even three coats of mascara.

Your eyebrows really do frame your face, especially if you add a touch of colour to make them look thicker and shapely. Always comb your brows up and over with a small brow brush or I use a kid’s toothbrush. Then feather through your brows with a brow pencil as near to your natural colour as possible.

Face definition

Contouring your face can be very intimidating, but it needn’t be. You can just give your face a little definition, which will make a big difference. Start small, just giving your cheeks some definition. Simply make a “fish face” by sucking in your cheeks and dust bronzing powder along the hollows of your cheeks. Apply with a small blusher-shaped brush.

For the makeup lovers amongst you, I have found the most divine brand new contour and bronzing palette, beautifully created by Dominic Paul (left). The beauty of this palette is that you can build up the colours and it will suit every skin tone, and at €35 what’s not to love?

Lips

Wearing lipstick is a great way to make a big glam statement. There is something so stylishly glamorous if you wear a bright red or pink lipstick. Bright lipstick will lift up the palest of faces, make your smile wider and look even lovelier.

I adore bright lipstick and wouldn’t leave the house without it on. Charlotte Tilbury’s “The Queen” (€32) is a beautiful bright fuchsia colour. Always use a lip liner to line around the lips and then fill the lips in with the lip pencil. This will not only make the lips look fuller but will help the lipstick last longer.
