The people of Cork will pay honour and respect to local man Donal Ring who is celebrating 60 years on the entertainment circuit this year at a special night in the Vienna Woods Hotel in Glanmire, Cork, on Friday 13 April.

The Donal Ring Céilí Band is a true institution on the Munster circuit. They played their first gig in Glen Hall in Blackpool in 1958. In 1972, they became the first céilí band to have a song in the Irish Top 10 when Paul O’Leary, the lead vocalist with the band at the time, recorded Beautiful City My Home By The Le, which spent seven weeks in the charts.

It was a song that resonated in the hearts of Cork people and ensured that the Donal Ring Band held a special place in their affections in the years that were to follow. The band were regular performers at The Rose of Tralee Festival for around 15 years.

Pat O’Riordan was the longest-serving vocalist with the band, while the current lead vocalist is Con Hegarty. The band plays a residency Sunday night gig in the Blarney Woollen Mills Hotel, which attracts a loyal following each week.

Donal will be joined by his brother Michael, an original member of the band, along with Donal’s daughter Mary, Donal Ring Jnr, Con Hegarty, and Terry McCarthy of The Dixies. Also on the bill for the Vienna Woods celebratory night are Donal’s son Dermot and his wife Irene, who will provide a fine selection of country music. Donal Snr’s grandson Aiden and his band Stringbox will also perform.

The show on Friday night, which runs from 8pm to 11pm, will feature céilí, country and more and a truly memorable night is in store as Cork pays trinute to Donal Ring on his 60th year on the music scene in his beloved home by the Lee.
