When Country Sound and the Irish Farmers Journal presented Jordan Mogey with the Best Newcomer in Country Music at the Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone in 2015, we were well tuned in to the emerging talent of the young man from Ballymoney, Co Antrim.

Jordan, now in his mid-20s, came to our attention with a Facebook post of the Wayne Kemp composition I’ll Leave This World Loving You, which was a major hit for Ricky Val Shelton in the USA. His interpretation was way beyond his years and showed an amazing maturity for someone so young.

He was, in essence, singing from the same hymn sheet and endorsing the classic observation of Ireland’s country king Big Tom, who once famously said: “When you sing a country song, you have to feel it and sing it from the heart.”

The young man, who has grown up with an incredible attachment to old country and the lore of the west, including a deep love of western movies, continues to draw his sustenance from the crystal-clear fountain which gave birth to true country music and where folks recognise the real deal when they hear it.

The Ballymoney man adores the legacy left behind by his idols, such as Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, Vern Gosdin, Merle Haggard and many more. The title song on his last album, Cowboys, Drifters and Angels, is just as good as it gets. One feels with a degree of certainty that here is a song Johnny Cash would have recorded with passion.

This week sees the release of Jordan’s brand new album, Love Loving You, a collection of 12 songs, all composed by Jordan in association with two of his Nashville-based friends Kent Maxson and Gerald Smith. It marks the latest step on the road to Nashville for this young singer, who is baptized in the waters of real country music.

It is, in some ways, a new departure for Jordan to record an entirely original album.

Yet, he remains ever faithful to his roots and his beliefs, and there is a lovely authenticity to the entire collection of new songs.

His enduring affection for Hank Williams is reflected in the song I’ll Be A Hankaholic Until I Die.

Songs like Better Things To Drink About and The Worst Hour of My Life have a strong honky-tonk overlay, while I Won’t Have to Worry ‘Bout You Leavin’ Anymore is just as country as it gets. Who Needs You Anyway, Love Loving You and She’s All Over Me are songs that set Jordan apart from so many other artists on the scene today.

“The songs range from the humorous to the heartbreaking. I think there’s something in the album for everyone.

“I want to thank all my family and friends, my producer Clive Culbertson, and also my friend and photographer, Ben.

“I can’t express how much it means to me to have the support of so many good friends. It has been tremendous and it is great to have so many on-board for this journey. I couldn’t do what I love doing without all this wonderful support,” says Jordan, who was one of the five nominees for the Best Newcomer Award at the RTÉ Irish Country Music Awards show in 2016.
