The European Milk Markey Observatory (MMO) has reported that EU dairy prices have remained stable for the last week.
The average butter price was €4,450/t, while whole milk powder (WMP) went for €2,570/t and cheddar was €3,160/t.
Skim milk powder (SMP) has also been holding at an average price of €1,400/t for the last month.
Although prices for some products dropped slightly, according to the MMO the strengthening of the euro against the US dollar is helping to compensate and buoy prices, with €1 currently trading at $1.22.
Global dairy trade
The MMO also commented on the most recent prices at the Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction, which saw its third consecutive increase in prices, with an overall increase of 5.9%.
At the GDT, butter saw a 7.9% increase to €4,284, WMP increased by 7.6% to €2,619 and SMP rose by 7.2% to €1,568.
New Zealand milk production recorded a 2.6% drop in December due to drought conditions, and the impact of the tightening in global supply still seems to be having a positive effect on dairy markets.
