James Mallon is closing in on a deal to purchase Carnaross Livestock Mart in Co Meath, the Irish Farmers Journal can reveal.

A deal is understood to have been agreed between Mallon and the owners of the mart – Gunne Estate Agents – in recent times.

The Irish Farmers Journal understands Mr Mallon is buying Carnaross Mart to run as a separate entity to his successful livestock export business, Viastar Ltd.

Viastar has long been a main player in the livestock exporting business, shipping cattle around Europe and north Africa.

Carnaross is one of the biggest marts in the country and it holds dairy, beef and sheep sales.
