As storm Amy wreaked havoc across Ireland on Saturday, the Irish Aberdeen Angus Association Extravaganza sale took place at Mid-Tipp Mart in Thurles. Despite the storms best efforts, trade seemed unaffected, as auctioneer Denis Barrett recorded 42 heifers sold for an average of €4,667, resulting in a healthy 88% clearance. Trade was just as buoyant in the bulls, as five out of the six select bulls on offer sold for an average of €7,320.
Leading the charge at €12,500 was the second last animal through the ring, the rising 13-month-old bull Tara Jubilee Eric A073 exhibited by Meath breeder Malachy Tighe. Having won the ABP bull calf of the future championships at Iverk show in August, the Stouphill Mr Perry U222 son was one of the stand out lots in the lead up to the event. Displaying a solid set of terminal and dairy-beef-indexes, he attracted interest from a number of pedigree and commercial enterprises, before eventually getting knocked down to the renowned Gigginstown herd in Co Westmeath.
Mogeely bull
Next best in the bulls at €7,000 was Albert DeCogan's 13-month-old Mogeely Farmer A967. A son of Dunard Navigator and the homebred dam Mogeely Flora U562, who goes back to the Flora line at Netherton, he carries a five-star terminal index of €94 along with a five-star carcase weight figure of +14.5kg. Having the final call on him was a breeder from Co Galway.

Fellow Cork breeders Shane and John Murphy were next in line in the bulls with Mercury Emoji A950 at €6,900. A son of McCornick Kapaldi W659 and Luddenmore Ellen Erica W442, this high DBI young bull boasted a massive carcase weight figure of +17.9kg and a five-star milk index of +9.5kg. Acquiring him was a pedigree herd in Co Cork.
Heifers
Females topped at €7,000 on two occasions. First to hit this mark was the 20-month-old Luddenmore Miss Essence A642 from the herd of Michael Sheahan in Co Limerick. A daughter of the herd's stock bull Drumhill Lord Hampstead V127, she goes back to the famous Miss Essence line at DMM in Canada and will now join Conor and Eunan Boyce's pedigree herd in Co Mayo.

Matching her at the same money was the youngest animal on the day at just 9-months-old and the last heifer through the ring, Carbery Lady Hilton B578. Exhibited by Keith and Caroline Vickery in Co Cork, this impressive young heifer is sired by Drumcrow Reeko and out of the Carrigroe Fred daughter, Rosscarbery Lady Huntess T147. Packing a fantastic set of terminal indexes, she was knocked down to John Blackburn's Killaney herd in Co Tyrone.

High indexes
With indexes to burn, Keakil Lady Emma A624 brought out by Ciaran Kelleher from Co Cork traded at €6,600. Sired by one of the breed favorites in HF Rebel 53Y, this yearling heifers mother is a full sister to the notable AI sire, Kealkil Prime Lad. Attracting considerable interest from a number of buyers, she found a new home in Co Longford.
Also hitting €6,600 was Rathmooney Diana A163 for Michael Hoey in Co Dublin. A daughter of the herd's senior stock bull Laheens Virgo, this 11-month-old heifer goes back to Aughnamona Nando and Friarstown Empire J160 on the dam's side. Adding her to their well-established profile in Co Westmeath was the Gigginstown herd.
Luddenmore
The Carruthers Earl W088 daughter Luddenmore Frances A651 received a call of €6,400 for Michael Sheahan. Born in March 2024, this high replacement index heifer goes back to the successful Frances line at Netherton and will now reside on a farm in Co Mayo. The Luddenmore herd had a terrific day out overall, going on to sell their four entries for an average of €6,425.
