Welcome to the Agri Careers Fair 2016. This is the first time the Irish Farmers Journal has run such an event and we are delighted to welcome our partner open eir on board. The agricultural sector supports a quarter of a million jobs in Ireland. We are delighted to provide a platform to promote that because, quite often, the industry is shy about publicising the employment it creates. This is a pity because there is a very good story to tell, as evidenced by the 600 plus roles that are available this year with the companies exhibiting at the event. However, the fair is about more than promoting the sector. The Irish Farmers Journal is owned by the Agricultural Trust and the Trust’s core objective and mission statement is to enhance the competitiveness of Irish farming and the wellbeing of those engaged in the sector. There is a shortage of skills in some areas of agriculture and we believe that, to fulfil this core objective, we must actively ensure there is a steady supply of excellent, qualified candidates to work in the industry – and that is exactly what we are doing with this fair. We look forward to meeting you on 3 March.
