Billy Loftus, a part time suckler farmer from Crossmolina, Co. Mayo stepped into the role of mart manager at Mayo-Sligo Livestock Mart in Ballina in mid-July last.
Billy has a degree in business and comes from an Agri-business background having worked primarily in the Agricultural side of ACC bank in the Mayo, Sligo and Donegal areas. While at the bank he also was involved in the SME (small and medium enterprise) business. He said that he is excited with the new position and is currently getting to grips with all aspects of the job. He said that the mart has excellent modern facilities and experienced staff with a strong and loyal farmer base in Mayo & Sligo.
The area is renowned for quality weanlings and store cattle breed from small healthy herds and this is a major factor in attracting an array of buyers from all over the country. The majority of herd owner are in BDP and BTAP discussion groups which has obvious benefits to purchasers i.e. emphasis on stock health, stock are weaned, eating meals, dosed and usually in BBQA.
In terms of the financial side of the business, he said that the mart has a strong balance sheet and is well positioned in meeting the current requirements under the property regulator. Billy succeeds James Cleary as mart manager.

James has worked for the mart for 41 years, the past 12 as mart manager supported by Marion Byron as assistant manager. He said that James will continue to work at the mart on a part time basis on sale days.
