Case IH will be offering a newly developed, high-torque, three-cylinder engine to power the Farmall A range. Case IH claims that the new Fiat Power Train (FTP) R22 engine is more fuel efficient and has been especially designed for those tractors.

The new R22 engine has been engineered for high levels of torque and fuel efficiency. It comes in a compact package that uses advanced engine technology to ensure environmental friendliness and keeps total costs of ownership to a minimum.

The new R22 engine completes FPT Industrial’s agricultural engine offering in the lower power range. This three-cylinder engine with 2.2 litres displacement produces outputs, depending on configuration, from 44 to 70hp (33kW to 52kW).

This is achieved by using a high pressure common rail injector diesel system, based around two valves per cylinder, with a fixed-geometry turbocharger, and a wastegate type after-cooler.

Case IH claims that the combination of these features helps the compact three-cylinder engine to produce torque ratings of up to 250Nm.

The common-rail fuel injection system has a working pressure of 1,600bar. The improved fuel efficiency and reduced noise levels are claimed to be achieved by a special combustion chamber in which the common rail injectors are specifically placed for optimal fuel combustion.

A newly developed anti-noise engine front cover adds extra insulation to significantly reduce engine noise. The R22 is also equipped with an internal exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a maintenance-free fine dust catalyst.

This combination of technology ensures the new engine meets Tier 4B/Stage 4 Final emissions legislation. This new R22 three-cylinder engine will be used in Farmall A tractors from the end of 2014.
