Trying to solve your beauty problems through trials and tests often only makes things worse.

So, how do we stay looking and feeling good when the daily struggle with dry skin, thinning hair or spots gets you down?

For sure your health is your wealth, but the other things can matter for many people, so for this month’s column I wanted to show you how you can easily solve your beauty problems, creating a more confident you.

Hair removal

Hair removal can be a chore. It can also be pricey if you’re constantly going for waxing at a salon, so why not try the new Braun Silk Epil 9 Flex from stockists including Boots (€199). This handy, mess-free waterproof epilator is an easy-to-use beauty tool that removes your body and facial hair in an instant, using a micro-grip tweezer technology that provides smooth skin for weeks.

Thinning tresses

If you are experiencing hair loss or thinning hair, you’re not alone, as one in three women experience this. It can be due to the fact that as a woman approaches the menopause, oestrogen levels decline and the negative impact of testosterone rises. This hormonal fluctuation can lead to hair thinning or hair loss, and the effects can be dramatic.

Plantur 39 shampoo and tonic are formulated with a phyto-caffeine ingredient, which penetrates all the way into the hair follicle. If used regularly, it can help reduce the effects of these hormones on the hair roots, which will help reduce hair thinning or hair loss during and after the menopause. The products have a lovely smell and make the hair feel as if it has more bulk to it, and the conditioner leaves the hair feeling soft. Plantur 39 can be purchased in leading supermarkets and pharmacies, including Inish Pharmacy from €11.50-€13.50.

Adult acne

Adult acne is common and can be harder to treat than in our youth because your skin is thinner and drier. Guinot’s amazing Acnilogic Acne Treatment (€40) is a breakthrough intensive gel treatment that not only hydrates, clears and mattifies the affected skin, but will help hugely with acne and tighten the pores. Acnilogic is full of vitamin E, which heals the skin and fights against the formation of free radicals. This serum is best used in the morning and evening if your skin is particularly bad with acne. Use as a one-month treatment, but results will happen within a few days.

You can purchase Guinot’s products from stockists including Elegant Lady beauty salon in Edenderry, Co Offaly. Their highly trained team of Guinot beauticians will happily talk with you on the phone to discuss your skin problem/type and which Guinot creams will help. You can order your Guinot products from their website (elegantladybeauty.ie).

I cannot recommend the Guinot skincare range enough. I have particularly dry menopausal skin and my neck has gone very lined, so I started using the Guinot Antirides Anti-Wrinkle cream and it has made a huge difference to my complexion; prices from €45 to €65 depending on which product you choose for your skin type.

Stretch marks

Stretch marks can occur when your body expands due to a growth spurt, weight gain or pregnancy – they start as little red marks and then go to white. They are caused by the skin expanding quickly and damaging the collagen and elastin tissue. It is hard to completely get rid of them, but you can definitely soften them by using a rich body oil such as Bio Oil or Palmer’s cocoa butter formula daily skin therapy. Both products are under €10 and are super-nourishing.

Cellulite

Did you know that you are more prone to cellulite during hormonal changes? Expect extra dimples to occur during pregnancy, menopause and weight gain. Cellulite affects nearly nine in 10 women.

Daily walks at a good steady pace will boost your circulation and will help reduce pitting. Drink at least a litre of water daily and keep away from sugary foods and drinks. Smoking and too much alcohol affects cellulite hugely. A daily good hard hand rub on the affected area using circular motions will loosen the toxins and breaks up the fatty deposits. Using the Nivea Q10 firming + goodbye cellulite body gel cream really helps smooth out the puckered skin, available from stockists including Boots at €7.99. A great tip that definitely helps hide cellulite is to use a really good self-tan. My favourite tan ranges include Skinny Tan, and the St Moriz Advanced Pro Formula ExpressTan. Both are quick, easy, non-streak fake tans that work a treat.

I hope you have enjoyed some of my beauty-solving tips. Next month, I can’t wait to tell you all about the best eye creams on the market.
