The Three Amigos are ready to rock ’n roll again or, to be more precise, keep it country – and we’re not talking about those good ole boys from the 1986 American western comedy movie of the same name (starring Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short), but Ireland’s own western warriors.

James Buckley was christened in Doon, Co Limerick. Greyhounds and country music were part of his life growing up down south. James soon became Jimmy and that has been his name since. He has lived near Monivea in Co Galway for many years now.

Down Sligo way, Patrick Feeney was singing with his dad and doing a good job on the ranch lands. I’ll Fly Away and I Saw The Light were among the first medley he committed to disc. The Gurteen man, who was raised in the heart of Coleman traditional land, was going country in style.

From the bayou state of Louisiana in the good ole USA, Robert Mizzell took a notion to head across the broad Atlantic. He was a bit of a lone ranger when it came to the music road. The vast bulk of the traffic has been in the other direction as Irish singers and musicians, going back two centuries and more, have headed to America. Many, especially from the Ulster region, have headed to the southern states and the Appalachians, where country music has its true home and fountain.

Robert has been part of the country music scene in Ireland for the last two decades and has recorded some great songs during those years. His latest single, Travelling Shoes, is taken from his forthcoming album. He fronts The Country Kings and they remain one of the top bands on the circuit – steadfast and true to the roots of country music.

All three, who still pursue their own individual careers, were brought together for a concert tour some years ago by Joe Finnegan who presents shows on Shannonside Northern Sound radio. Joe still takes charge of The Three Amigos’ tours. They took a break for more than three years before reuniting in January of 2016 for a fresh tour.

“We have an 18-date tour lined up this time and the three lads are delighted to be heading back out on the concert circuit again,” says Joe.

“They had a highly successful tour at the start of the year and featured on the inaugural Country Music Awards night on RTÉ in June, which drew a massive audience.

“They have also had a Late Late Show appearance and there has been a sea change in attitudes to country music at RTÉ over the last two years or more. The Ryan Tubridy Late Late Show on country music was a phenomenal success in October 2015. It is a hugely welcome development and it has to be very much for the good of the entire scene.”

Jimmy, Robert and Patrick are putting the final touches to their new show, which hits the road in The Landmark Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon.
