The heads of Glanbia and Kerry Group are upbeat on dairy markets for 2018 and confident in the short-term outlook for milk prices.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, Glanbia managing director Siobhan Talbot said an average milk price of 30c/l would be a good outcome.

Kerry Group CEO Edmond Scanlon said dairy markets will be driven more by supply than demand in 2018.

On Tuesday, Carbery held its base price for January at 34.78c/l excluding VAT. Dairygold held its price on Monday at 34.15c/l excluding VAT.

LacPatrick also held its price at 33.91c/l excluding VAT and in Northern Ireland, it is paying 29.45p/l.

Last week, Aurivo held at 33.68c/l, Glanbia held at 33.2c/l and Kerry held at 34.62c/l, all excluding VAT. Lakeland Dairies held its base at 33.68c/l, but its 1c/l butter bonus was cut.

After three consecutive price rises, average prices at the GDT auction fell by 0.5%. Skim milk powder prices fell 3%, whole milk powder rose by 0.3% and butter prices were up just over 1%.
