Farmers are being offered an opportunity to deliver their hazardous waste to one-off bring centres for little or no cost.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Teagasc, and the Department of Agriculture have joined forces in a pilot scheme that offers farmers the chance to remove a wide range of types of farm waste.

The first bring centre is in Cillin Hill Mart in Kilkenny on 29 October, with 10 other centres being opened around the country over the next month, mainly in mart yards, and each for one day only.

Illegal

The EPA stresses that in many cases, on-farm retention of certain hazardous waste types is illegal.

“This is an excellent opportunity for farmers to safely dispose of their hazardous waste and we encourage all farmers to avail of it and avoid the possibility of prosecution,” the EPA said in a statement announcing the initiative.

The types of waste accepted include out-of-date pesticides; veterinary medicines and animal health-care wastes; needles and syringes; waste paints; aerosols; corrosives (acids and detergents); oil and air filters; oily wastes; brake fluids; brake pads; antifreeze; adhesives; and coolants. These all carry a charge of €2/kg.

Waste packaging is accepted at a charge of €8/200 litre drum or €4/25 litre drum.

Waste engine oil, waste hydraulic oil and waste oil containers are accepted free of charge. Also free of charge is farm or domestic waste, electronic and electrical equipment (TVs, computers, fridges, freezers, power tools, kettles), batteries and light bulbs.

It is stressed that each waste type must be segregated and packaged to avoid leaks.

All needles and syringes delivered must be in separate sealed containers. Farmers will be issued with receipt of payment and a certificate of acceptance.
