Sandie dies in USA

Sandie Jones, who represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1972 with a song in Irish called Céol on Ghrá, has died in America. She was 68 years old.

Sandie was a native of Crumlin, Dublin, and one of a family of 11.

She featured with The Royal Earls in her early years and later spent a short time with The Dixies whom she fronted along with Joe O’Toole in the early 1970s.

Sandie performed dance dates all over Ireland in that decade and released two country songs, I Don’t Wanna Play House and The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA.

She moved to Abu Dhabi in the mid-1980s and later to the USA where she had resided for several years. Condolences are tendered to her family at this time.

Sligo show lends supports

The annual fund-raising concert organised by the Benbulben Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Support Group will be held in the Southern Hotel in Sligo on Tuesday, I October. The show is in aid of the funding for medical equipment for Sligo Hospital and to help people cope and manage lung disease.

The main man behind the venture is Michael McGloin who continues to put a major effort behind this special night in Sligo town.

The show will feature Kevin Prendergast, Paul Kelly, Anne Biddie, Matt Leavy, Caitriona Ní Cheannabháin, Roisín Murphy, John Nelson, Jason Moyles, David Godfrey and Christina Reilly. Brendan Magee and Eugene Cunningham will provide the backing music for the night.

Cootehill show raises over €19,000

The eighth annual concert organised by John and Ann McIntyre in The Errigal Hotel, Cootehill, on 12 September raised a whopping €19,100 for Drumlin House Training Centre in Cootehill and St Christopher’s Hospice in Cavan. The venture attracted a full house and the show featured Michael English and his band, John McIntyre and band, Simon Casey, Damian Davis, PJ Murrihy and Mick Mulhern. The compere for the night was Joe Finnegan.

John has extended grateful thanks to everyone who helped out in any way in making the venture such a resounding success.
