There will be the usual fine selection of pedigree stock on display, alongside some commercial stock that will show the benefits of crossing commercial ewes with a pedigree Charollais ram.

The benefits of using Charollais highlighted by the society include rapid growth rate, with lambs having the ability to put on lean meat fast, combined with a high kill-out percentage due to the sheep being light-boned and heavily muscled.

This excellent conformation also allows Charollais-cross lambs to achieve excellent grades.

The society says the Charollais is capable of all this without compromising on lambing ease, with stock rams delivering hardy, vigorous lambs that are easily born, making them an ideal sire for use on ewe lambs or hoggets.

This year saw a successful premier sale at Blessington Mart, which is representative of the continued growth of the breed with over 300 members located throughout the country.

Over the three days at the Ploughing, members of the society will be present to answer any questions visitors have about the breed.
